Malama Kai Foundation is a 501(c)(3) tax-exempt nonprofit corporation dedicated to ocean stewardship through community service and public education.1) To sponsor charitable activities consisting of community service and education pertaining to ocean recreation and environmental protection.
2) To educate the public regarding stewardship and wise management of marine and coastal resources in order to guarantee their sustainability in perpetuity.
3) To support other activities which promote marine conservation.
Founded in January 1991, Malama Kai Foundation seeks to provide a funding mechanism for marine and coastal resources management projects, seminars and education programs through individual and corporate contributions, and competitive grants.
WE NEED YOUR SUPPORT! Private funding is essential to the success of these projects. Malama Kai is filling a critical need in Hawaii for active nongovernmental support of marine conservation.
Malama Kai Foundation projects include:
MOORING BUOYS: Malama Kai is raising funds to install and maintain a statewide system of 330 day use mooring. buoys. Using these buoys prevents significant anchor damage to our precious coral reefs.Over 100 mooring buoys have already been installed along the West Hawaii Coas. and Oahu
EDUCATIONAL VIDEOS: Malama Kai has produced Hawaii Island.- On Loan From Our Children, an educational video on sustainable coastal development on the Big Island of Hawaii. The Foundation is currently cosponsoring a marine litter video with the U.S. Coast Guard.
PUBLIC EDUCATION PROGRAMS: Malama Kai has cosponsored REEFTALK, a monthly public presentation series on the marine and coastal environment in Kona and Kohala. REEFTALK has provided informative, entertaining, and timely slide and lecture presentations on topics including fisheries, coastal management, sea turtles and marine mammals.
PROFESSIONAL TRAINING: Malama Kai helps organize and administer training programs promoting skills to manage sustainable development of our coastal and marine environment. Topics have included native plant landscaping, and day use mooring buoy installation and management.
CURRICULUM DEVELOPMENT: Malama Kai administers MoanaHonua Hawaii project, developing curriculum for elementary marine science. The project surveyed Hawaii Island elementary science teachers who highlighted the need for third and fourth grade marine science material. The project is currently preparing materials for this level to be used in classrooms, as well as in the field.
