I discovered Extended Horizons on a mountaintop in Colorado. VVhile sharing a lunch table with strangers at a slope side eatery in Aspen, I noticed that one of the ladies was wearing an "Extended Horizons - Maui" T-shirt. Knowing that I'd soon be visiting Maui, I asked her about the operation. She was ecstatic and had nothing but good things to say about owner Erik Stein and his hard working crew. Diving Lanai is an experience not to be missed... There are over 25 sites from which to choose, each of them unique. ..coral formations range from large mushroom heads to shallow canyons bordered with layer after layer of plate coral. The biggest draws for diving here are the green sea turtles....
Lanai's southern shore lie the signature dive sites of the island: the Cathedrals. There are two of them, Cathedrals I & II, both distinctly different. This is where Extended Horizons normally heads first, depending upon what the customers request. At Cathedral 1, a 10 foot wide opening in the lava formation leads into a large underwater room. The top and sides are completely enclosed except for small cracks that allow sunlight to filter through. The far wall, however, is where the site gets its name; it is honeycombed with a series of 12 inch openings that resemble the large stained-glass mosaics found in churches. Shafts of sunlight stream through the holes, creating an almost spiritual atmosphere. Dive lights are not required inside Cathedral I, but Extended Horizons' guides carry them and often provide torches for each buddy team. After spending a few minutes admiring the unique lava formations and examining the cracks and crevices, the guide leads divers through one of several narrow exits.
Extended Horizons prides itself on relaxed, flexible, personal service. The boat and site briefings and debriefings are thorough and well presented. Based on the trips I took, they live up to that claim most of the time.
